রতিদিন গড়ে প্রায় ৫০ কোটিবার ‘মাথা চুলকায়’ গুগলের সার্চ ইঞ্জিন। প্রযুক্তি সংবাদবিষয়ক সাইট সিনেট জানিয়েছে, প্রতিষ্ঠার ১৫ বছর পরেও গুগল সার্চ ইঞ্জিনের ওই দৈনিক বিপাকে পড়ার খবর নিশ্চিত করেছেন সার্চ ইঞ্জিনটির লিড ডিজাইনার জন ওয়াইলি।

সার্চ ইঞ্জিন হিসেবে গুগল যতই শক্তিশালী হোক না কেন, প্রতিদিন তাকে এমন সব প্রশ্নের সম্মুখীন হতে হয় যে, মাথা চুলকিয়েও সঠিক উত্তর দিতে হিমশিম খায়। ব্লুমবার্গ টিভিকে দেওয়া এক সাক্ষাৎকারে গুগল সার্চ ইঞ্জিনের প্রতিদিনকার এই বিপাকের খবর জানান ওয়াইলি। এই সমস্যা সমাধান করাটাও যে অতি জরুরি, তাও স্বীকার করেন তিনি।

প্রতিমাসে ১০ হাজার কোটিবার বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে গুগলে অনুসন্ধান চালান সারাবিশ্বের ইন্টারনেট ব্যবহারকারীরা। ব্যবহারকারীদের ওই অনুসন্ধানে সঠিক তথ্য সরবরাহ করতে প্রতিদিন ২ হাজার কোটি ওয়েবসাইট থেকে নতুন তথ্য সংগ্রহের চেষ্টা করে গুগল।

Microsoft Officially Replaced Hotmail with Outlook

The software giant has completed the transition from Hotmail to the new Outlook.com. As a result, the latter now boasts over 400 million accounts overall. The representatives of the company point out that the new Outlook email application has a number of different features from Hotmail. For example, it offers two-factor authentication, an updated calendar and app, as well as integration with cloud service called Skydrive and Skype.

Experts admit that most Hotmail users won’t notice any difference, so you can continue using your account as long as you want. You can also claim an Outlook email address whenever you like. Microsoft mentioned that Hotmail had over 300 million active accounts before its closure. Thus, upgrading had meant communicating with millions of people, upgrading all the mailboxes and also making sure that everyone’s details like mail, calendar, contacts, folders, and personal preferences were all preserved during the upgrade. This process was done live and as fast as in 6 weeks.

Industry observers remind that Hotmail was one of the first Internet-based email services, created by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith in July 1996 as “HoTMaiL”. Three years later Microsoft acquired the Internet email service for about $400 million to rebrand it as “MSN Hotmail”. Finally, Outlook.com was launched three months ago, based around the company’s Metro design language. Apparently, the service closely mimics the interface of Microsoft Outlook. Now we can officially say goodbye to Hotmail, which already doesn’t exist.

US President Planning Online Wiretapping Law

As you know, the British Labour Government will surely go down in history for its extensive use of CCTV cameras, but in the meanwhile, Barack Obama can become known for his online wiretapping laws.

Media reports say that Barack Obama is going to end the long-running debate over online snooping with a legislation allowing law-enforcement agencies tapping into many types of online communications.

Everyone understands that bringing in this law will surely have political, technical and legal obstacles. Indeed, if Obama gets it through it would really represent a sea change in American culture. Industry experts point out that if he succeeds, the FBI and other agencies will have a right to snoop on voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) services like Skype and real-time chats.

Apparently, it would end a regime where the FBI has difficultly snooping but is able to eavesdrop on traditional telephone calls. Of course, tech firms hate the idea, which would likely face stiff opposition in Congress. At the moment, spooks can ask the courts to wiretap almost anything, but only traditional telecommunications carriers are demanded to make it easy.

The law in question – Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act – doesn’t apply to any of Microsoft’s services, for example. This includes Skype, as it doesn’t class Microsoft as a traditional telecommunications carrier.

Thus, Obama’s new legislation would encompass VoIP, chat and any other online communication services. However, it is still unclear how tech companies could be compelled to help the authorities unscramble encrypted communications, apart from providing access. Actually, Obama’s proposed legislation is a slightly watered down version of what the Federal Bureau of Investigation wants. The FBI had called for a blanket requirement that ISPs provide authorized officials the same kind of sweeping, turn-key access to their networks that phone companies do.

However, tech firms, civil libertarians and some government officials claimed that it was impractical for smaller firms and such back doors can present serious security risks. Some of the critics insist that the fact the President would end up pushing the legislation will make him the punching bag for every American citizen who is already worried about their government.

China Shut Down Huge Movie Hub

China’s authorities have shut down siluhd.com – one of the country’s most famous websites. The portal has over 130 employees, 1.4 million registered users, and over a decade of servicing the public with high-quality pirated films. Siluhd.com used to be amongst China’s favorites, but recently the website’s CEO and some of the directors were detained, and the portal was closed down.

The announcement was made through a local news portal known as Sina – the report said that Siluhd used to offer hundreds of thousands of HD films (in Blu-Ray format), TV series, music tracks and video games. The suggestion was that the portal was targeted by the Chinese authorities because it charged its members with about $8 per month. Still, it is yet unclear how much money the portal generated along the years.
China celebrates World Intellectual Property Day in the end of April, and this year the event came with a big, fat prize – according to statements of the country’s officials, the CEO and 7 of the portal’s directors were detained on suspicion of copyright violation. In addition, 30 out of the 139 employees could also be detained, because they allegedly uploaded copyrighted works.
Media reports confirm that police found in the CEO’s house over 190 1-TB hard disks with more than 10,000 pieces of films and TV series. Apart from Siluhd, a number of other popular websites, most of which offered free content streaming and downloading services, were closed down as well, according to Sina. Nevertheless, their predicament might appear temporary, because one of them, for example, simply resumed its business the next day after the popular event.

Facebook Created International Incident

Facebook faced some troubles after the company refused to remove a fake page claiming to be the Aussie ambassador to the European Union. Ex-Aussie Liberal leader Brendan Nelson is furious after Facebook refused to remove the page that claimed to be written by him.

Facebook page attacked Aussie Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd. Although Nelson thought it was quite lame, he was still worried, because he knew people interacting with the fake account believed it was really him.

Brendan Nelson wrote to Facebook in the United States specifically drawing the account to their attention and asking to take it down. Taking into consideration that he was ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, NATO and the European Union, he was concerned about the potential for the page to cause damage to the reputation of Australia.

However, it turned out that even in his position of relative official seniority, Nelson couldn’t do anything about it. Actually, Facebook didn’t even respond to the request. Nelson admitted that the social network was frankly the least responsive entity he had ever dealt with. The experts point out that coming from a person who has dealt with Aussie government officials before this is quite a bold claim.

Brendan Nelson forced the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and intelligence security agencies to take a look at his problem, but they couldn’t do anything about it either. It seems that the only way to get Facebook’s attention is to declare war on the former colony. Although a touch drastic, no Aussie can ever let a diplomatic slur pass it by.

৭ মে পেস্টবিনে লেখা এক মেসেজের মাধ্যমে ‘অপারেশন ইউএসএ’র ঘোষণা দেয় অ্যানোনিমাস। মার্কিন ড্রোন হামলায় নিরস্ত্র মানুষের হতাহতের ঘটনায় ওবামা সরকারকে দোষারোপ করে হ্যাকারদের সংগঠনটি।

অপারেশন ইউএসএ-তে ডিএনএস আক্রমণ, ডিডিওএস আক্রমণ, অ্যাডমিন টেকওভার, ডেটাবেইজ লিক এবং বিভিন্ন সাইটের দখল নেওয়ার মাধ্যমে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রকে সাইবার ম্যাপ থেকে মুছে দেওয়ার হুমকি দিয়েছে অ্যানোনিমাস। সাইবার অভিযানের প্রথম পর্যায়ে দেশটির শীর্ষস্থানীয় ব্যাংক এবং আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো আক্রমণের শিকার হবে এমনটাই ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছে অ্যানোনিমাস।

এদিকে মধ্যপ্রাচ্য এবং উত্তর আমেরিকার একদল হ্যাকার যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের উপর সাইবার আক্রমণ চালাতে প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছে বলে নিশ্চিত করেছে দেশটির ডিপার্টমেন্ট অফ হোমল্যান্ড সিকিউরিটি। তবে ওই সাইবার আক্রমণ বড় ধরনের কোনো প্রভাব ফেলতে পারবে না; বরং সাময়িক সময়ের জন্য জনগণের ভোগান্তির কারণ হতে পারে বলেই মন্তব্য করেছে হোমল্যান্ড সিকিউরিটি।

সর্বশেষ উত্তর কোরিয়ায় সাইবার আক্রমণ চালিয়ে খবরের শিরোনাম হয়েছিল অ্যানোনিমাস। হ্যাকারদের সংগঠনটির ইতিহাসে ওই সময়ে উত্তর কোরিয়াকে সবচেয়ে বড় প্রতিপক্ষ বলে অভিহিত করেছিল প্রযুক্তিবিষয়ক সংবাদমাধ্যমগুলো। কিন্তু এবার যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বিরুদ্ধে সরাসরি সাইবার যুদ্ধ ঘোষণা করে সে পরিস্থিতি পাল্টে দিয়েছে অ্যানোনিমাস।

বৃহত্তম সাইবার আক্রমণের ঘটনায় গ্রেপ্তার

২৩ মার্চ ঘটা ‘বিশ্বের বৃহত্তম সাইবার আক্রমণ’-এর ঘটনায় জড়িত সন্দেহে এক ডাচ নাগরিককে গ্রেপ্তার করেছে স্পেনের পুলিশ। বার্তা সংস্থা বিবিসি জানিয়েছে, ডাচ পুলিশের অনুরোধে স্পেনের বার্সেলোনা থেকে ওই ডাচ নাগরিককে গেপ্তার করে স্থানীয় আইনশৃক্সখলা রক্ষা বাহিনী।

গ্রেপ্তার ডাচ নাগরিক নেদারল্যান্ডসের হোস্টিং ফার্ম সাইবারবাংকারের ব্যবস্থাপক স্ভেন কাম্ফিয়াস বলে সন্দেহ করছে পুলিশ। মার্চ মাসের শেষ দিকে স্প্যাম ফিল্টার প্রতিষ্ঠান স্প্যামহসের উপর সাইবার আক্রমণ চালিয়েছিল সাইবারবাংকার। বিবিসি এবং গার্ডিয়ানের মতো একাধিক প্রভাবশালী বার্তা সংস্থা এই ঘটনাকে ‘বিশ্বের বৃহত্তম সাইবার আক্রমণ’ বলে জানিয়েছিল।

মার্চের শেষের দিকেই স্প্যামহসের উপর ডিস্ট্রিবিউটেড ডিনায়াল অফ সার্ভিস বা ডিডিওএস আক্রমণ শুরু করেছিল সাইবারবাংকার। ডিডিওএস আক্রমণের সময় প্রচুর ডেটা পাঠিয়ে প্রতিপক্ষের সার্ভার এবং ওয়েবসাইট ক্র্যাশ করার চেষ্টা করে হ্যাকাররা। এ ধরনের আক্রমণের সময় পাঠানো ডেটা সাধারণত প্রতি সেকেন্ডে গড়ে ৫০ গিগাবাইট হলেও, স্প্যাসহসের উপর সাইবারবাংকারের আক্রমণের সময় তা প্রতি সেকেন্ডে ৩০০ গিগাবাইট ছাড়িয়ে গিয়েছিল।

স্প্যামহসে সাইবার আক্রমণের ঘটনার সঙ্গে জড়িত সন্দেহে কাম্ফিয়াসকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে বলে নিশ্চিত করেছেন নেদারল্যান্ডসের এক সরকারি আইনজীবী। দ্রুত কাম্ফিয়াসকে নেদারল্যান্ডস কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে হস্তান্তর করা হবে বলে জানিয়েছেন তিনি।
