Sweet Success: Global 100 Operators Report 2011

A Latin American company makes it into the top 10 for the first time, as the world's biggest telecoms operators seek to leverage the growth potential of the region.

The top 10 operators in the new Global 100 ranking include a name from Latin America for the first time. America Movil's recent endeavours to build up its business both at home in Mexico and int he Latin American region as a whole have pushed it up to number nine in the rankings, up from 15th place in both 2010 and 2009. And with lofty ambitions to do more, the mobile operator group could mount a credible challenge for a higher placing in coming years. The telco added more than €15 billion to its revenues in 2010, recording a turnover of €36.75 billion, in no small part due to the consolidation of fixed-line operator Telmex into its results from 1 July 2010. America Movil is currently in the process of acquiring the 40% of Telmex it does not already own. It has also recorded strong growth in key markets, particularly its Mexican wireless business and its Brazilian operation, which each contributed more than 25% to turnover. America Movil has ambitious growth plans, insisting in its most recent 20-F report that it aims to build on its position, and crucially its subscriber base, in Latin America and the Caribbean, "both by developing our existing businesses and by making strategic acquisitions when opportunities arise." However, the operator's strategy has triggered some concerns that it might sacrifice profitability for growth. America Movil CFO Carlos Garcia Moreno Elizondo told analysts on a conference call on its Q2 results in July that the company will keep a close eye on EBITDA, but that it will prioritise growth. "We have been always careful on EBITDA, but I think what we need to do is to take advantage of the growth in Latin America," he said.

Google+ opens up to teenagers

Internet giant's social network now available to users as young as 13. Google Inc. on Thursday opened up Google+ to teenagers, just days after loosening the rules about using real names on the social network. The age limit had previously been 18, but Google vice president for product management Bradley Horowitz announced on Google+ that users could now be as young as 13. Facebook, the world's leading social network with more than 800 million members, also has an age limit of 13. Horowitz said Google+ is implementing several safety features aimed specifically at teens. "With Google+, we want to help teens build meaningful connections online," he said in a post on his Google+ account."We also want to provide features that foster safety alongside self-expression." Google+ organizes online connections into circles such as friends and family and one of the safety features is a reminder to a teen whether they really want share a post publicly outside of their circles. Horowitz said Google+ is also giving teen users "control over who can contact them online. "By default, only those in teens' circles can say hello, and blocking someone is always just a click or two away," he said. "Between strong user protections and teen-focused content, it's our hope that young adults will feel at home (and have some fun) on Google+," Horowitz said. On Tuesday, Google+, which had been insisting that users go by their legal names, began allowing users to use nicknames or established pseudonyms such as Madonna. "Over the next week, we'll be adding support for alternate names--be they nicknames, birth names, or names in another script--alongside your common name," Horowitz said. He described the move as a "small step towards improving the ways in which you can communicate your identity on Google+." Google+, which launched last year, has attracted more than 90 million users, Google chief executive Larry Page said last week.

Datawind to launch £99 tablet with bundled Internet in UK

U.K.-based device maker to offer a year of free Internet access via Vodafone network; predicts other players will adopt same business model. Low-cost tablet maker Datawind this week revealed plans to launch a £99 tablet in the U.K. that is bundled with a year of free Internet access. "To get the next billion on the Internet we need to not just give these people a device but give them access," Alia Khan, vice president of U.K. operations for Datawind, told Total Telecom. To this end, Datawind is planning to release a £99, 7-inch Android tablet in the U.K. by the end of 2012, called the Ubislate. The purchase price includes one year of free Internet access albeit over Vodafone's GPRS network in a bid to keep a lid on costs. Khan argued that the only reason Datawind can afford to bundle Internet access is due to its patented data-compression technologies. "Our users use a fraction of the amount of data that other devices use," Khan claimed. "Even if they [other vendors] wanted to go through the process of signing an operator relationship, and bundling on the cost of the data, they could never do it at the price we can do it at." However, Datawind does employ other techniques to manage data consumption. For instance, the Ubislate is marketed as having "unlimited mobile Internet" but in reality customers are restricted to 30 hours of usage per month, and are not able to stream any audio or video content via the device's preinstalled browser. Despite its limitations, Khan believes other vendors will want to adopt the free usage model. In fact, it has already begun. Amazon bundles mobile network access with the price of the 3G version of its Kindle e-reader. Datawind's business model also has similarities with that of U.S.-based mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE) Macheen. A wholesale partnership formed between the company and 3UK in December last year enables consumer electronics makers to bundle own-branded mobile Internet access with their products, acting as an operator as far as their customers are concerned. The U.K. is not the only country that can expect cheap Internet access bundled with Datawind tablets either. "Our partnership with Vodafone is actually a global one," Khan said, citing 16 more countries that Datawind can extend the offer into, ncluding Germany, Italy, South Africa and Turkey (see below for full list). "Our devices use Vodafone SIM cards and run on their network, however it is purely a wholesale relationship with them," she explained. Meanwhile, Datawind announced in October 2011 that the Indian Government had placed an order for 100,000 of its low-cost Aakash tablets for $35 per unit, for use by students. The device has a similar specification to the Ubislate but is WiFi only. Countries included under Datawind's agreement with Vodafone: Albania, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Hungry, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Spain, and Turkey.

‘ওয়েবলগ’ শব্দটি সর্বপ্রথম ব্যবহার করা হয় ১৯৯৭ সালের ১৭ ডিসেম্বর। শব্দটি প্রথম ব্যবহার করেছিলেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নাগরিক জন বার্জার। এর ঠিক দু’বছর পর ১৯৯৯ সালের এপ্রিল এবং মে মাসের মাঝামাঝি সময়ে পিটার মহোলজ নামে এক ব্যাক্তি ওয়েবলগ শব্দটিকে ভেঙ্গে দু’ভাগ করেন- ‘উই’ এবং ‘ব্লগ’ হিসেবে। এর পরই সারাবিশ্বব্যাপী ব্লগ জনপ্রিয় হতে শুরু করে। তবে মাঝামাঝি সময়ে আরেকটি উল্লেখযোগ্য ঘটনা ঘটে। অনলাইনে দিনলিপি লেখার সুবিধা নিয়ে যাত্রা শুরু করে ‘ওপেন ডায়েরি’ যা ছিলো অনেকটা এখনকার ব্লগের মতোই।

সম্প্রতি বিভিন্ন সংবাদমাধ্যম নিজস্বভাবেই ব্লগ নিয়ে এসেছে। ব্লগে এখন অনেক রথী-মহারথীরাও লিখছেন। ব্লগের মাধ্যমে সার্চ জায়ান্ট গুগল থেকে শুরু করে প্রযুক্তিবিশ্বের অনেক তথ্যই জানিয়ে দেয়া হয়। 

ব্যক্তিগত চিন্তা-চেতনার পাশে ব্লগ হয়ে ওঠছে সংবাদমাধ্যমের ভূমিকাতেও। ইন্টারনেট সংযোগ এবং মনের ভাষা প্রকাশের ইচ্ছা থাকলেই ব্লগ লেখা যায়। ইংরেজি ব্লগের পাশাপাশি বাংলায়ও ব্লগ লেখা শুরু হয়েছে।
