২৫ বছর আগেই স্টিভের হাতে ছিলো আইপ্যাড!

মোবাইল কম্পিউটিংয়ের জগতটাকে পাল্টে দেওয়া আইপ্যাড ২৫ বছর আগেই অ্যাপল সহ-প্রতিষ্ঠাতা স্টিভের হাতে দেখেছিলেন বলে জানিয়েছেন তার প্রতিবেশী এবং প্রযুক্তির ভবিষ্যতবক্তা রে হ্যামন্ড। খবর টাইমস অফ ইন্ডিয়া-এর।

রে দাবি করেছেন, আইকনিক উদ্ভাবক স্টিভ জবসকে অ্যাপল থেকে তখনকার দায়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত সিইও জন স্কালি ‘তাড়িয়ে’ দেওয়ার আগেই স্টিভ জবস আইপ্যাড নিয়ে কাজ করছিলেন।

রে হ্যামন্ড ১২ অক্টোবর ভারতের পুনেতে অনুষ্ঠিত ন্যাসকম ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং সামিটে এ তথ্য জানিয়েছেন। ১৯৮৪ সালে হ্যামন্ড ‘দ্য অনলাইন হ্যান্ডবুক’ নামে ই-কমার্সের ওপর বিশ্বের প্রথম বই লিখেছিলেন। প্রযুক্তি বিষয়ে তার অনেক অনুমানই সঠিক হয়েছে। ফলে প্রযুক্তির ভবিষ্যতবক্তাই এখন তার পরিচয়। এ ছাড়াও তিনি একসময়ে স্টিভের প্রতিবেশী ছিলেন।

রে হ্যামন্ড জানিয়েছেন, স্টিভ জবসই আমাকে প্রযুক্তির সঙ্গে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। ঘটনার দিনটিতে আমি আমার গাড়িটি পরিষ্কার করছিলাম। একটু দূরেই আরেকটি লোক তার গাড়িতে কি জানি করছিলো। আমার সঙ্গে জানাশোনা অতোটা ছিলো না। আমার দিকে এগিয়ে এসে একটি স্প্যানার চাইলো। এর কিছুদিন পর সে একটি কম্পিউটার তৈরি করেছে বলে আমাকে দেখালো। তার সে কম্পিউটারটি দেখেই আমার প্রযুক্তির প্রতি আগ্রহ বেড়ে গেলো। এ ঘটনার দশ বছর পর আমি যখন অ্যাপলের হেডকোয়ার্টারে গেলাম তখন জানতে পারলাম প্রতিবেশী সেই লোকটির চাকরিই চলে গেছে!’

‘এরপর দায়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত সিইও স্কালি আমাকে একটি ভিডিও দেখালেন এবং বললেন, স্টিভ অ্যাপল থেকে চলে যাবার সময় এ ভিডিওটি তৈরি করে গেছে। বিশ্বাস করবেন কিনা জানিনা, সে ভিডিওটি ছিলো এখনকার আইপ্যাডের।’

হ্যামন্ড আরো বলেছেন, ‘স্কালির সঙ্গে ভিডিওটি দেখার পরে স্কালি আমাকে বলেছিলেন ২০১০ সালে ডিভাইসটি বাজারে আসবে।’

উল্লেখ্য, ২০১০ সালের ২৭ মার্চ বাজারে আসে আইপ্যাড। আইপ্যাডের দ্বিতীয় সংস্করণ বাজারে আসে চলতি বছরের মার্চে। বর্তমানে এর তৃতীয় সংস্করণটি তৈরি করছে বলেই বাজারে খবর রয়েছে।

European Commission approves Skype's acquisition by Microsoft

The deal will not significantly impede effective competition in the EEA, believes the EC

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the Internet voice and video communication provider Skype by Microsoft.

The EC believes that the deal will not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.

The commission found that the parties' activities mainly overlap for video communications in the area of consumer communications, where Microsoft is active through its Windows Live Messenger.

The commission, however, considers that there are no competition concerns in this growing market where numerous players, including Google, are present.

According to the EC, Skype has a limited market presence for enterprise communications products, and does not compete directly with Microsoft's enterprise communication product Lync, mostly used by large enterprises.

The Commission assessed the possibility for Microsoft to degrade Skype's interoperability with competing services and/or to tie its own products, in particular its leading Windows operating system, with Skype, thereby limiting other players' ability to compete.

The commission also found that Microsoft will not have an incentive to degrade Skype's current interoperability as it is essential for Microsoft that Skype's services are available on as many platforms as possible in order to maintain and enhance the Skype brand.

The Commission was notified about the transaction on 2 September 2011 for regulatory clearance in the EEA.

টেক জায়ান্ট মাইক্রোসফটের তৈরি অপারেটিং সিস্টেম উইন্ডোজ ৮ (Windows 8) ঘিরে প্রযুক্তি বিশ্বে অনেকদিন ধরেই আলোচনা হয়েছে। অবশেষে সব জল্পনা-কল্পনার অবসান ঘটিয়ে অবশেষে মাইক্রোসফট কর্তৃপক্ষ আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে নতুন এ অপারেটিং সিস্টেমের ওপর থেকে পর্দা সরিয়ে নিয়েছে। ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার বিল্ড ডেভেলপারস কনফারেন্সে উইন্ডোজ ৮ বাজারে আনার কথা জানিয়েছেন মাইক্রোসফট উইন্ডোজ বিভাগের প্রেসিডেন্ট স্টিভেন সিনোফস্কি। কম্পিউটার, ট্যাবলেট এবং ল্যাপটপ প্ল্যাটফর্মের জন্য ব্যবহৃত হবে এ সংস্করণটি। এ সংস্করণটিতে নতুন কি কি থাকছে তা নিয়েই এবারের মেইনবোর্ড।

আগ্রহের কেন্দ্রবিন্দুতে থাকা উইন্ডোজ ৮ সম্পূর্ণ নতুন ফিচার নিয়ে হাজির। এ প্রসঙ্গে মাইক্রোসফট উইন্ডোজ বিভাগের প্রেসিডেন্ট স্টিভেন সিনোফস্কি জানিয়েছেন, ‘আমরা উইন্ডোজকে নতুন করে সাজিয়েছি। উইন্ডোজ ৯৫ সংস্করণের পর অপারেটিং সিস্টেম আপগ্রেডের ক্ষেত্রে সবচেয়ে বেশি উইন্ডোজ ৮ কেই গুরুত্ব দেয়া হয়েছে। এ সফটওয়্যারটি কোনো আপস ছাড়াই নতুন ক্ষমতার।’

এবারের ‘বিল্ড’ নামে ডেভেলপার্স কনফারেন্সে টেক জায়ান্ট মাইক্রোসফট উইন্ডোজ ৮ এর বিভিন্ন ফিচার বিষয়ে বিস্তারিত জানিয়েছে। এ প্রসঙ্গে স্টিভেন সিনোফস্কি বলেছেন, ‘অন্যান্য সংস্করণে মাল্টিটাস্কিং সুবিধার কথা বলা হলেও উইন্ডোজ ৮ এ পাওয়া যাবে আসল মাল্টিটাস্কিং-এর মজা।’

কেবল ট্যাবলেট নয়, এ অপারেটিং সিস্টেম ডেস্কটপ এবং ল্যাপটপের জন্যও। উইন্ডোজ ৮ এ ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে হাইপার- ভি ভার্চুয়ালাইজেশন; যার ফলে উইন্ডোজ ৭ বা তার আগের সংস্করণের জন্য তৈরি অ্যাপ্লিকেশনগুলোও এখানে কাজ করবে। এতে থাকবে একটি অ্যাপ্লিকেশন স্টোর, যেখান থেকে ব্যবহারকারীরা নানান অ্যাপ্লিকেশন ডাউনলোড করে নিতে পারবেন। ক্লাউড কম্পিউটিংভিত্তিক এ অপারেটিং সিস্টেমে ডেভেলপারদের অ্যাপ্লিকেশন তৈরির জন্য নানান টুলস দিয়ে দেয়া হয়েছে যা ইতোমধ্যেই ডেভেলপারদের কাছে প্রশংসা পেয়েছে।

বিশ্লেষকরা বলছেন, ‘টেক জায়ান্ট অ্যাপলের অপারেটিং সিস্টেমকে টক্কর দিতেই নতুন করে ভাবতে হয়েছে মাইক্রোসফট কর্তৃপক্ষকে।’

নতুন অনেকগুলো ফিচার রয়েছে উইন্ডোজ ৮-এ। এরমধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হচ্ছে ইউজার ইন্টারফেস, টাচ, স্কাইড্রাইভ, অ্যাপস্টোর, এআরএম প্রসেসর, টাস্ক ম্যানেজারসহ বেশ কিছু নতুন ফিচার।

মেট্রো ইন্টারফেস:
উইন্ডোজ ৮ সংস্করণে থাকছে দুটি ইন্টারফেস। একটি সাধারণ কম্পিউটার ইন্টারফেস এবং আরেকটি হচ্ছে ‘মেট্রো’ নামের ট্যাবলেট কম্পিউটারে ব্যবহারের জন্য আলাদা ইন্টারফেস। মেট্রো ইন্টারফেস অনেকটাই উইন্ডোজ ৭ এ থাকা টাইলসভিত্তিক ইন্টারফেসের মতো। এ ইন্টারফেস ট্যাবলেট কম্পিউটারের জন্য মানানসই। মেট্রো ইন্টারফেস টাচবান্ধব ইন্টারফেস হবার ফলে নেভিগেশন আরো সহজ হবে। এতে রয়েছে পার্সোনালাইজড লেআউট, যাতে স্বচ্ছ টপোগ্রাফি এবং অ্যানিমেশন ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। দ্রুত চালু হবার জন্য সব ধরনের ইউজার অ্যাপ্লিকেশন স্টার্ট আপ স্ক্রিনের সামনেই দেখাবে মেট্রো ইন্টারফেস।

টাচ কীবোর্ড:
উইন্ডোজ ৮ এ থাকছে দুটি টাচ কীবোর্ড। একটি বড়ো বাটনযুক্ত ফুল-সাইজ টাচ কীবোর্ড এবং আরেকটি থা¤^ কীবোর্ড। টাইপের গতি বাড়াতে এবং নিঁখুত করতে কীবোর্ড দুটিতেই একাধিক ফিচার রয়েছে। কোনো ওয়ার্ড টাইপ করতে শুরু করলে কীবোর্ড সেই শব্দটি অনুমান করে দেখাবে এবং শব্দটি বেছে নেয়া যাবে। সাধারণ মাউস এবং কীবোর্ড উইন্ডোজ সমর্থন করবে। কোন ভাষার কীবোর্ড ব্যবহার করা হবে সেটি ব্যবহারকারী পছন্দ করে নেবার সুযোগ পাবে। কোনো নির্দিষ্ট প্রোগ্রামের পরিবর্তে ইনপুট এবং ভাষা নির্বাচন করলে উইন্ডোজ সেটি স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে পুরো কম্পিউটারের জন্য মেনে চলবে।

স্কাই ড্রাইভ:
মাইক্রোসফট উইন্ডোজ ৮ সংস্করণে যোগ হচ্ছে ক্লাউড সুবিধা। ক্লাউড সুবিধার এ পদ্ধতিটির নাম ‘স্কাই ড্রাইভ’। এ ভার্চুয়াল পদ্ধতিতে যেকোনো ব্রাউজার বা মেট্রো অ্যাপ্লিকেশন ব্যবহার করে কোনো ফাইল, ছবি, ডকুমেন্টে অ্যাকসেস পাওয়া যাবে।

অ্যাপ স্টোর:
অ্যাপ স্টোর প্রসঙ্গে স্টিভেন সিনোফস্কি জানিয়েছেন, ‘নতুন অপারেটিং সিস্টেমটি সবচেয়ে বেশি গুরুত্ব দিচ্ছে অ্যাপ্লিকেশনের ওপর। উইন্ডোজ ৮ এ প্রথমবারের মতো যোগ হচ্ছে অ্যাপলের অ্যাপ স্টোরের মতোই একটি অ্যাপ স্টোর। উইন্ডোজ ৭ এ যেখানে র‌্যাম লাগে ৪০৪ মেগাবাইট সেখানে উইন্ডোজ ৮ এ লাগবে মাত্রই ২৮১ মেগাবাইট। মুল অপারেটিং সিস্টেমেই আসল ক্ষমতা রয়েছে তাই আলাদা লেয়ার বসানোর প্রয়োজন পড়েনি। ফলে হার্ডওয়্যারের জন্য এটি বিদ্যুৎ সাশ্রয়ী এবং কম ব্যাটারি খরচ করে। স্টার্ট-আপ টাইমও কমে এসে মাত্র ৮ সেকেন্ডে ঠেকবে।

এআরএম প্রসেসর সমর্থন করে:
উইন্ডোজের ইতিহাসে প্রথমবারের মতো উইন্ডোজ ৮ এরআরএম-এর তৈরি প্রসেসর সমর্থন করবে। এ ছাড়াও এএমডি এবং ইনটেলের চিপও এ অপারেটিং সিস্টেমের জন্য সমর্থনযোগ্য থাকছেই। এআরএম প্রসেসর সাধারণত ট্যাবলেট এবং স্মার্টফোনে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এআরএম প্রসেসর সমর্থন করতে মাইক্রোসফটকে এনভিডিয়া, কোয়ালকোম এবং টেক্সাস ইনস্ট্রমেন্টস নামের হার্ডওয়্যার প্রস্তুতকারী জায়ান্টদের সঙ্গে কাজ করতে হচ্ছে।

নতুন টাস্ক ম্যানাজার:
নতুন অপারেটিং সিস্টেমে থাকছে নতুন একটি টাস্ক ম্যানেজার। এই ম্যানেজার কতোটুকু সিপিইউ, মেমোরি ব্যবহার হলো, অ্যাপ্লিকেশন এবং প্রসেসরের ক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটারের পারফর্মমেন্স কেমন সেসব তথ্যও দেখাবে। এ ছাড়াও উইন্ডোজ ৮ এর কন্ট্রোল প্যানেলেও আসছে পরিবর্তন।

দ্রুতগতির বুটআপ:
মাত্রই আট সেকেন্ডের বুটআপ সময় লাগবে বলেই মাইক্রোসফট জানিয়েছে। এ প্রসঙ্গে সিনোফক্সি তার ব্লগে বলেছেন, ‘বুটআপের জন্য সারাদিন বসে থাকার প্রয়োজন হবে না। আমরা যখনই বুট করতে যাই, আমদের চাওয়া থাকে দ্রুতগতির বুট আপ। উইন্ডোজ ৮ এ সেটিই থাকছে।’

স্মার্টফোনের জন্য নয়:
‘সব ধরনের প্ল্যাটফর্মের জন্যই তৈরি হচ্ছে উইন্ডোজ ৮’ এমন খবর চাউর হয়েছিলো আগেভাগেই। তবে, মাইক্রোসফট কর্তৃপক্ষ জানিয়ে দিয়েছে, আপাতত স্মার্টফোন প্ল্যাটফর্মের জন্য উইন্ডোজ ৮ নয়। বরং স্মার্টফোনের জন্য উইন্ডোজ ৭ ই ভালো। তবে প্রযুক্তিবিশ্বে গুজব রয়েছে হয়তো নতুন সংস্করণটিতে পরবর্তীতে স্মার্টফোন সমর্থনের অপশন ছাড়তে পারে মাইক্রোসফট।

এনএফসি সাপোর্ট:
নিয়ার ফিল্ড কমিউনিকেশন (এনএফসি) সমর্থন করবে উইন্ডোজ ৮। এ প্রযুক্তির মাধ্যমে উইন্ডোজ ৮ অপারেটিং চালিত ডিভাইস কম রেঞ্জের যোগাযোগ পদ্ধতিতে ব্যবহার হবে।

নিরাপত্তা:
অন্যান্য সংস্করণের চেয়ে উইন্ডোজ ৮ অপারেটিং সিস্টেমের নিরাপত্তা আরো গভীরভাবে পর্যালোচনা করছে মাইক্রোসফট। ভাইরাস বা বাগ থেকে ফাইল বা সেটিংস রক্ষায় উইন্ডোজ ৮ কার্যকর হবে বলেই সিনোফস্কির মতো। 

কবে আসবে?
উইন্ডোজ ৮ কবে নাগাদ বাজারে আসবে সে বিষয়ে এখনো আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে কিছু জানায়নি মাইক্রোসফট। তবে, স্টিভেন সিনোফক্সি বলেছেন, ‘কবে নাগাদ উইন্ডোজ আসবে সেটি নিয়ে ভাবছি না; আমরা ভাবছি মান নিয়ে।’ ২০১২ সাল নাগাদ এটি বাজারে আসতে পারে বলেই খবর রটেছে।

Sony PlayStation Vita to debut 17 Dec in Japan

Portable gaming device to come equipped with 3G, WiFi connectivity. Sony Corp. said Wednesday it will launch its next-generation portable game machine, the PlayStation Vita, in Japan on Dec. 17--earlier than in any other country--along with 26 software titles. The new device will debut outside Japan some time next year, the company said without being specific. In Japan, the Vita is expected to become a major competitor to Nintendo Co's 3DS handheld machine this holiday season. The 3DS, which debuted in February, plays games in 3-D without the need for special glasses. The Vita is equipped with an organic light-emitting diode touch-screen display, which is particularly suitable for high-definition graphics. "This new device is packed with every possible function, and that's why we confidently call it the ultimate entertainment system," said Hiroshi Kawano, head of Sony's Japanese game unit, at a press conference. The Vita comes in Wi-Fi and 3G network models. It is expected to become a key element of Sony's strategy of offering entertainment services such as videogames, movies and music on networked devices. Earlier this year, Sony's videogame business suffered a serious blow when hacker attacks on its PlayStation Network caused a massive data breach worldwide and forced the company to temporarily shut down its online game service. Kawano said the Vita will have its own Web browser, music player and photo and video applications. It will offer easy access to social networking services such as Twitter and Facebook.

Facebook eyes late 2012 for IPO - report

Facebook Inc. has set the later part of 2012 as the time for its much-anticipated initial public offering of stock, the Financial Times reported online Wednesday, citing people familiar with the social networking powerhouse.
The IPO, expected to be one of the world's biggest with a possible valuation of up to $100 billion, had been expected by April 2012, with some investors and analysts speculating that it could even come this year.But sources told the FT that Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg wants to wait until next September or later so that Facebook's employees will remain focused on product development rather than an IPO payout.

India minister facing difficulties tracking social networking content

Govt saw 33 reported incidents of misuse of social networks between April and July. Indian security agencies are facing difficulties in tracking content on social networking websites as they are encrypted, the federal information technology minister said Friday. "The government regularly interacts with telecom service providers and solution service providers to address the issue and implement solutions to the extent possible, keeping in view the security, service and developmental needs of the country," Kapil Sibal told lawmakers in the upper house of parliament. Indian licensing rules make it compulsory for telecom companies to provide facilities for lawful interception and monitoring of communication flowing through their network, including from social networking websites, he said. Between April 2010 and July 2011, as many as 33 incidents of misuse of social networking websites, related to publishing of objectionable content relating to political leaders, religion, national security and individuals, have been reported to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, he said. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team is a federal agency that monitors computer security incidents in the country.

Samsung Electronics unveils new tablet with advanced display technology

Electronics giant bulks up high end of its portfolio with LTE-equipped Galaxy Tab.

 
Samsung Electronics Co. on Thursday unveiled a new tablet computing device equipped with an advanced display technology, as part of the push to develop a broader range of products using the company's ultra-thin panel for larger mobile products, touted as the key feature of its flagship smartphones.

Samsung, the world's second-largest handset maker after Nokia Corp. and the largest maker of TV sets, memory chips for computers and other digital gadgets, as well as flat-panel screens for many products, revealed the new 7.7-inch Galaxy Tab using its active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, or AM-OLED, display, which is more energy efficient than the typical smartphone screen, at the 2011 IFA trade show in Berlin.

The 335-gram Galaxy Tab will run Google Inc.'s upgraded Android operating system, called honeycomb, and uses a dual-core 1.4-gigahertz processor, Samsung said. The device also has a 32 gigabyte memory and is equipped with advanced mobile network technology called long-term evolution, or LTE, which offers faster download speeds than the current third-generation platform, allowing users faster access to TV programs, movies and video conferencing.

Samsung launched its first 7-inch Galaxy Tab in 2010 to better compete with rival Apple Inc., which is currently engaged in a broad legal fight with the Korean electronics giant around the globe, including in South Korea, Germany and Japan. Apple fired the first shot in the U.S. in April by filing a patent complaint against Samsung, claiming the electronics company "slavishly" copied its iPad and iPhone.

Samsung Mobile Display, a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI Co., supplies the new display technology to Samsung and other global handset makers.

China Telecom to light up fourth Europe-Asia fibre route by end-2011

Operator builds on its 'Information Silk Road' to support its enterprise, telco customers' latest IP services.

China Telecom Europe (CTE) on Wednesday confirmed its plan to switch on its latest fibre cable linking Europe and Asia before the end of the year. The cable system has been in the works since July 2010, and will expand the company's Euro-Asia Network Solution (ENS), becoming the fourth of its terrestrial routes to span the two continents. CTE's three other fibre networks include the Transit Europe-Asia (TEA) cable built in partnership with Rostelecom; the China-Russia 2 (CR2) – in partnership with Transtelecom; and the Transit-Mongolia cable that connects Beijing to the other two systems. The fourth cable will connect China to the TEA and CR2 fibre links via Kazakhstan, forming what CTE refers to as an "Information Silk Road", enabling the operator to support the latest-generation of IP services on behalf of its enterprise and telecoms customers either based in the region, or eyeing potential growth opportunities there. "Now that the foundation of the Information Silk Road has been firmly established, I am looking to enrich the network infrastructure with more innovative and value-added solutions and services," said CTE's managing director Yan Ou, in a statement. China Telecom Europe said ENS is able to deliver any combination of voice, video, data and IP traffic simultaneously, and offer single channel connection speeds of up to 10 Gbps. "From the day the Information Silk Road was conceived, I have envisaged it to be a state-of-the-art network delivering next-generation communications across Europe and Asia, rather than merely a group of low latency cables," said Ou. Still, latency was certainly an important factor when Ou outlined CTE's plans for its fourth terrestrial cable. He explained to Total Telecom last year that the Kazakhstan route would cover the shortest distance between China and Europe, and would therefore see lower latency compared to its other cable systems. More overland fibre links would also reduce Asia's reliance on subsea networks, which are vulnerable to damage caused by shipping, and the continent's seismic activity. Regional ICT think tank LIRNEasia proposed during this year's CommunicAsia the building of a cable system starting in Japan that would run into Europe via Turkey. Steve has been an incredible leader and mentor to me, as well as to the entire executive team and our amazing employees. We are really looking forward to Steve's ongoing guidance and inspiration as our Chairman.

I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Apple's unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that-it is in our DNA. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.

I love Apple and I am looking forward to diving into my new role. All of the incredible support from the Board, the executive team and many of you has been inspiring. I am confident our best years lie ahead of us and that together we will continue to make Apple the magical place that it is.
